CNN fixture Anderson Cooper, who officially came out as gay last year, will be honored by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization GLAAD, USA Today reports.

The organization “will present the journalist, author and talk-show host with the Vito Russo Award at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on March 16, which will be hosted by ‘Good Morning America’ anchors Josh Elliott, Lara Spencer and Sam Champion,” the story reports.

The report adds: “Cooper has tackled multiple issues relevant to the LGBT community, including bullying of LGBT youth, families supporting their transgender children, the dangers of so-called ‘ex-gay conversion therapy,’ and soldiers forced to serve under ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’"

The award is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality, the piece notes. Previous recipients include Ricky Martin, Rosie O’Donnell, Elton John and Nathan Lane.
