Daytime Talk Show Gets the Ax

One of the rookie daytime talk shows — part of the freshman crop of syndicated shows that have been vying to fill the void left by the end of “Oprah” — is getting the ax. B&C reports that “The Ricki Lake Show” won’t make it to a second season.

Twentieth Television confirmed today that the show will not be renewed, with production set to wrap March 28, the piece reports. The show will continue to air original episodes along with reruns until the start of the fall season.

In a statement, Stephen Brown, Twentieth’s executive VP of programming and development, said: "We would like to thank Ricki Lake as well as executive producer Gail Steinberg and the entire staff for their work this season. While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life after the military, divorce and addiction, we were simply not able to break through the crowded talk show marketplace."

The show appears to have been lost in the shuffle of new daytime talkers that included Disney-ABC’s “Katie,” NBCUniversal’s “Steve Harvey” and “Trisha Goddard,” and CBS Television Distribution’s “Jeff Probst,” the piece notes.

“Three of those shows — ‘Katie,’ ‘Steve Harvey’ and ‘Trisha Goddard’ — will return next year, with ‘Katie’ and ‘Steve Harvey’ both having entered the market with two-year deals in the majority of the country,” the report notes. “’Jeff Probst’ isn’t expected to continue into next season, but there has been no official word from CBS yet. Twentieth also last week renewed its other rookie, entertainment magazine ‘Dish Nation,’ for a second season.”

“Ricki Lake” has been delivering a 0.7 household rating season-to-date, the piece notes. It joins “Anderson Live” and “Jeremy Kyle” on the list of new talk shows that won’t make it to season two.
