Fox Tweaks Its Prime-Time Schedule

Fox is tinkering with its prime-time lineup, moving a couple of shows to a new night in what is billed for now as a one-time-only experiment.

EW.com’s Inside TV reports that the Zooey Deschanel comedy "New Girl" will move from its Tuesday spot to Thursday, April 4, where it will air a new episode. A “New Girl” repeat will run in the show’s normal Tuesday slot at 9 p.m.

Mindy Kaling’s "The Mindy Project," meanwhile, will have two new episodes that week — one in its usual spot on Tuesday, April 2, and a second new episode on Thursday, April 4.

“Original episodes of the two half-hour comedies will get ‘Glee‘s’ coveted 9 to 10 p.m. slot, right after a live episode of ‘American Idol,’” the report notes. “No new ‘Glee’ episode will be delayed as a result; a rerun was previously scheduled for that night.”

The report adds: “Though this Tuesday-to-Thursday shift is being billed as a special outing, it could be a good test for the network to consider when crafting next season’s schedule. The Thursday 9 p.m. slot will certainly look all the more attractive after ‘The Office‘s’ series finale this spring.”

The piece notes that at the start of the current season “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project” had to compete in a “comedy-packed hour” where they went up against ABC’s “Happy Endings” and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23“ and NBC’s “Go On” and “The New Normal.”

“Now things are a little less competitive, with ‘Apartment 23’ canceled and ‘Happy Endings’ moved to Fridays,” the piece notes. “But Fox may still be considering a new night for its comedies (the season finale of ‘Raising Hope’ will also air on a Thursday — March 28 — as previously announced).”
