Lawmakers Issue Protest to Motion Picture Academy Over Seth MacFarlane’s Oscars Performance

Seth MacFarlane’s performance Sunday as host of the Academy Awards rubbed a number of people the wrong way, and two state lawmakers have now condemned it in a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

AP reports that California Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, both Democrats who lead the Legislature’s women’s caucus, called MacFarlane’s performance degrading to women and asked the academy to use better judgment in the future.

In a letter sent to academy President Hawk Koch, the lawmakers wrote: “There was a disturbing theme about violence against women being acceptable and funny. From topical jabs about domestic violence to singing about ‘boobs’ during a film’s rape scene, Seth MacFarlane crossed the line from humor to misogyny."

Others have also criticized MacFarlane’s approach, which included a song about looking at actresses’ breasts and a joke about a domestic violence episode between rapper Chris Brown and singer Rihanna.

The letter requests that the academy disavow MacFarlane’s behavior, the piece notes. The letter adds: "On Oscar night, when Hollywood seeks to honor its best, Seth MacFarlane’s monologue reduced our finest female actresses to caricatures and stereotypes, degrading women as a whole and the filmmaking industry itself.”

An academy spokeswoman had no immediate comment, the story notes.

MacFarlane, whose performance also provoked an accusation of anti-Semitism from the Anti-Defamation League, has already indicated he doesn’t want to host the ceremony again, as we reported earlier this week.

  1. Typical “lawmakers” who eat at the public trough like swine and instead of doing their job jump on some TV show for publicity reasons only. Tell these dames to get back on the job (as if they ever are) or quit and get a “real” job where they actually have to work.
