‘Wild Thing, I Think I Love You, But I Want to Know for Sure.’ It’s a Line From One of the Most Famous Rock Songs Ever. The Man Who Sang It Has Died at 71

The man who sang those words in the iconic song "Wild Thing" in the 1960s has died at 71, the BBC reports. Reg Presley was the lead singer of the seminal garage rock band the Troggs.

Presley, who founded the group — originally known as the Troglodytes — in the U.K. in the early 1960s, fronted the band through a series of minor hits including "Love Is All Around,” written by Presley; “With a Girl Like You" — the band’s only No. 1 U.K. single; and "I Can’t Control Myself." But the British group’s towering contribution to popular culture was its rendition of “Wild Thing,” written by U.S. songwriter Chip Taylor.

“Wild Thing” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. in July 1966, but peaked at No. 2 in the group’s native Britain. The song was eventually ranked at No. 257 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Presley retired from music about a year ago, after becoming ill during a concert in Germany. He was diagnosed with lung cancer.
