A training video produced by the Internal Revenue Service has turned into an embarrassment for the agency. Deadline.com reports that the IRS has admitted that the clip, made in 2010, was a mistake.

The video uses IRS staffers to parody the original 1960s edition of “Star Trek.”

“It and a second video that parodied TV’s ‘Gilligan’s Island’ are estimated to have cost about $60,000,” Deadline reports. “The agency came under fire after CBS News obtained the ‘Star Trek’ video under a Freedom of Information request and it went viral on the Internet.”

The clip was reportedly shown at a 2010 training and leadership conference. “The characters (who look and sound like a bunch of tax collectors) are en route to the planet Notax to combat identity theft,” the story reports.

In a statement, the agency said: “The IRS recognizes and takes seriously our obligation to be good stewards of government resources and taxpayer dollars. There is no mistaking that this video did not reflect the best stewardship of resources.”
