Two-time Oscar nominee John Malkovich, known for his feature film work in “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Con Air” and other movies, will play the lead role in the NBC summer series “Crossbones,” reports TVLine.com.

“The 10-episode action-adventure series, greenlit by NBC last May and written and co-executive produced by ‘Luther‘s’ Neil Cross, takes place in 1715 and promises to deliver ‘the true legend’ of ‘the most notorious pirate to ever sail the earth,’” the story reports.

Malkovich will play Edward Teach — better known as the pirate Blackbeard — the authority figure on the Bahamian island of New Providence — “part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise and a mounting threat to international commerce,” the piece reports. “To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the buccaneers’ haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But the closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple.”

Hugh Laurie was reportedly up for the role late last year.

“For Malkovich, this marks his first significant TV commitment since the 2002 French miniseries ‘Les Miserables’ and his first-ever series regular gig here in the States,” TVLine reports.

Malkovich was nominated for Academy Awards for supporting roles in “Places in the Heart” (1984) and “In the Line of Fire” (1993). He is also known for big-screen appearances in “Being John Malkovich,” “The Killing Fields,” “Empire of the Sun” and other films.

On TV, he won an Emmy for CBS’s “Death of a Salesman” and also appeared in HBO’s “RKO 281” and TNT’s “Heart of Darkness,” the piece notes.
