One of the stars of the NBC comedy series “The Office” has signed on with an upcoming CBS drama project. EW.com’s Inside TV reports that Rainn Wilson will play the lead role in the pilot “Backstrom.”

The news comes after Wilson’s “Office” spinoff “The Farm” failed to move forward at NBC during the recent development season. Wilson was courted by a number of projects after NBC passed on "The Farm."

The CBS project is based on a Swedish detective series of the same name, with Wilson tapped to play an "overweight, offensive, irascible cop," according to the story.

Also cast in the project is actor Dennis Haysbert, who will play Det. John Almon.
