A TV actress who is openly gay is No. 1 on a new list of the actors with the greatest appeal to faith-based audiences. Reuters reports that "Criminal Minds" star Kirsten Vangsness topped the list of TV actors.

Among movie stars, Sandra Bullock came out on top.

“Vangsness, 40, who plays fun-loving FBI technical analyst Penelope Garcia on the CBS show ‘Criminal Minds,’ is openly gay and announced her engagement to her longtime girlfriend in 2009,” the story reports. “Actors on the popular crime shows ‘NCIS’ and ‘CSI’ also fared well in the 2013 rankings of the most appealing celebrities by survey respondents who said they attend regular services at their house of worship.”

The survey results were released by E-Poll Market Research, and were based on a survey of 1,100 Americans age 13 and older who ranked more than 40 celebrity attributes.

“James Earl Jones, Sean Connery and Morgan Freeman, who has played God or God-like figures several times, rounded out the top four movie stars,” Reuters reports.

Among TV actors, "NCIS" actress Cote de Pablo placed second, with "Hot in Cleveland" actress Betty White and "NCIS" stars Sean Murray and Pauley Perrette rounding out the top five.

The report adds: “Connery, Taraji P. Henson, Amy Adams, Dwayne Johnson and Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus Christ in the 2004 film ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ are all more popular with faith-based audiences than among the general U.S. population, the poll found.”

  1. Even more interesting to me is that faith-based audiences are watching “Criminal Minds.”

  2. It appears that this is a reflection of the popularity of the CBS procedurals with that audience more than anything else. All the actors, other than Betty White, are from one of those shows.
