NBC’s ‘The Voice’ Hits a Sour Note in the Ratings

“The Voice,” the singing competition that has been leading a ratings turnaround for NBC’s prime time, hit a sour note Tuesday night, based on Nielsen overnights.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the program lost six-tenths of a ratings point in the key 18-49 demo from last week’s broadcast, settling for a 4.0 average rating — still the top-rated show of the night on broadcast. Leading out from it, NBC saw its two-hour reality show “Ready for Love” equal last week’s lackluster 1.2.

CBS had its own lackluster results, but still slipped past NBC to claim the top spot for prime time overall. CBS won the night with a 2.2 average in viewers 18-49, just ahead of NBC (2.1 average) and comfortably ahead of ABC, Fox and Univision in a three-way tie with 1.5 averages.

CBS finished well ahead of the pack in total viewers, averaging 12.9 million to outpace ABC (8.8 million), NBC (6.2 million), Fox (3.5 million) and Univision (3.5 million).

CBS won despite a one-tenth dip for “NCIS: Los Angeles” from its previous original, to a 2.6 average in 18-49, and a one-tenth downturn for “Golden Boy,” with a 1.4. “NCIS” was flat with a 2.7.

ABC had mixed results, with its struggling diving competition “Splash” equaling last week’s series low, a 1.1 average in the 18-49 demo. “Dancing with the Stars” fell two-tenths from last week to a 2.0, while “Body of Proof” ticked up one-tenth to a 1.5.

Fox aired just one original program, “Hell’s Kitchen,” which lost three-tenths from a week ago to deliver a 1.9 in adults 18-49.

  1. My wife and I turned off the show last night after we watch Usher clearly trying to stretch out time.
    “The winner…..of……the……singing…..battle….is…….”

  2. I’m not sure if it’s live yet or not, but I don’t think Usher has control over the time. It’s up to the producers and editors. What I mostly minded was they skipped over a number of battle rounds like they did in the original auditions. If they don’t have time to show the whole thing, they should schedule it when they do. I muchly appreciate we don’t have to see all the preliminary stuff that Idol viewers see, so that helps. The Voice starts off with singers that can pretty much kick Idol contestants butts. I really wish Christina and Ceelo weren’t coming back – Usher and Shakira are such a wonderful change of pace. Then again, I hold Usher responsible for Beiber…
