A cable drama series that has been a huge hit continues to see its numbers grow. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that HBO’s “Game of Thrones” set a series record Sunday with 4.72 million viewers turning out for its 9 p.m. airing.

Another cable drama, meanwhile, appears to be headed in the other direction: AMC’s “Mad Men,” which recently bowed for season six, lost almost 20% of the 3.4 million viewers who turned out for the season’s premiere, settling for 2.7 million viewers for episode two.

“Thrones” is off to a strong start on its third season, pulling in 4.36 million total viewers for the premiere and 4.27 million for episode two before Sunday’s third episode. Sunday’s 4.72 million represented an 11% increase.

Adding in Sunday’s 11 p.m. encore, “Thrones” tallied 5.8 million viewers on the night.

“’Veep’ returned to HBO at 10 p.m. for its second season, averaging just shy of 1.2 million viewers,” the report notes. “And while the Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy was down from its 1.4 million debut in 2012, it was steady with its freshman finale. Also of note: the series topped every original broadcast of ‘Girls’’ recent sophomore season in the same half-hour.”
