Why NBC’s ‘Community’ May Survive Despite Anemic Ratings

NBC’s "Community" might be saved from cancellation despite ratings that aren’t exactly stellar, reports The New York Times’ ArtsBeat.

That’s because "Community" compares well in the ratings with almost any other comedy NBC could renew for next season, the story points out. Its Thursday episode drew only 2.4 million viewers and matched a series low in the 18-49 demographic, but it still had higher demo numbers than "The New Normal" and "1600 Penn," the story notes.

The show "has amassed a loyal audience and the number of episodes required for syndication, and at least the ratings have not been trending downward. ‘Parks and Recreation’ is the only other NBC comedy that can make that claim," the story reports.

"Go On" plummeted near the end of the season, ending with 2.7 million viewers, while "Whitney" also dropped, finishing with 2.9 million viewers.

"Add it all up, and ‘Community’ has a fighting chance," The Times says.

  1. Sure, now that Community completely sucks, NBC is happy with the show. Without Dan Harmon the humor has flatlined.

  2. The show is quirky, inventive and willing to take chances. A hard-core audience should be able to amass a writing campaign to keep it going! There is no other show on TV that compares to its ability to present oddball humor that sustains the thread created by Harmon and crew. With all the junk (mostly “reality” shows) on TV, Community stands as a beacon of fun that should not disappear
