Al Jazeera Opening First U.S. News Bureaus, and the Locations May Surprise You

Al Jazeera America, the cable news network that is being made from Current TV, is opening its first U.S. news bureaus, and the channel’s initial list of sites includes places without many competitors, reports TVNewser.

An unofficial list of 12 potential bureaus surfaced, with the list including Detroit and Chicago, the story notes.

The thinking behind those locations may be that it will allow Al Jazeera America to differentiate itself from other cable news networks, such as CNN and MSNBC. "The American auto business is still based in Detroit, and that seems to be the impetus behind having a bureau there," TVNewser notes.

According to Politico, Al Jazeera’s list of bureau locations also includes more obvious choices such as Los Angeles, New York and Washington, along with smaller cities such as Denver and Nashville.

Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans and Dallas are also on the list.

An Al Jazeera spokesman refused to confirm the list, noting that no leases have been signed.

  1. Dearborn MI is 9 miles from Detroit and has the largest Muslim concentration (about 30%)of population in the US. Still wonder why it is on the list?
