Why Oscar Winner Ang Lee Bailed Out on FX Project

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has left an FX drama project. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Lee departed the pilot "Tyrant" due to exhaustion.

"Tyrant" is "one of the most brilliant ideas for a series that I’ve seen and one about which I was very excited. However, after spending over four years making and promoting ‘Life of Pi,’ I have recently realized that I need some rest," Lee said in a statement. "Because I cannot give 100 percent to this exciting project at this time, I cannot allow myself to do anything that may affect the potential for this exciting new series."

"Tyrant," from "Homeland’s” Howard Gordon, is about an American family that gets caught up in the workings of a Middle East nation.

The Fox 21 project will start looking for a replacement for Lee, and doesn’t expect the change to greatly impact the shooting schedule, the story notes.

Lee has won two Oscars for best director — for “Life of Pi” earlier this year and for “Brokeback Mountain” in 2006.
