ABC Continues to Reap Ratings Rewards From NBA Finals

As the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat move toward the series’ final stages, ABC continues to rack up ratings wins.

Based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo, the Alphabet Network coasted to another dominating win Sunday night as the Spurs gained the upper hand with a win in the pivotal game five, taking a 3-2 series lead.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the game earned a 5.6 average rating in adults 18-49. ABC’s warmup programming saw “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night” average a 1.9, while “NBA Countdown” delivered a 2.5. The report notes that the preliminary numbers are subject to significant adjustments due to the nature of live programming.

The other broadcast networks didn’t put up much of a fight. Fox aired all repeats, while CBS opened with a fresh installment of “60 Minutes” before rolling out repeats. “60 Minutes” sank to a season-low 0.9, slipping three-tenths of a point from last week in the 18-49 demo.

NBC had the “2013 Miss USA Competition,” which averaged only a 1.3 in 18-49 over two hours — down significantly from last year’s 1.8. NBC filled an hour with a repeat of “The Voice” (0.8 average), but got a boost in the 7-8 p.m. hour with the conclusion of the U.S. Open golf tournament, which averaged a 2.1 during that hour.

When all was said and done, prime time was a runaway for ABC, with a 4.7 average in viewers 18-49, followed by NBC (1.4 average), Fox (0.9), Univision (0.8) and CBS (0.6). ABC was also way out in front of the pack in total viewers, averaging 12.2 million to lead NBC (5.3 million), CBS (4.2 million), Fox (2.0 million) and Univision (1.9 million).
