Award-winning documentary maker Ken Burns has been tapped by PBS to create a new three-part program based on Siddhartha Mukherjee’s "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer," reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker.

The documentary, "Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies," will be executive produced by Burns and directed by filmmaker Barak Goodman. It’s slated for a spring 2015 debut.

WETA-TV in Washington, D.C., a production partner on all of Burns’ films, will partner with Stand Up to Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, to create an outreach program about the documentary.

"Cancer touches nearly everyone in this country, and public media can play a vital role in educating Americans about the disease," said WETA President and Chief Executive Sharon Percy Rockefeller. "We will illuminate cancer as never before, exploring in depth its history, sharing the experience of those battling it, and offering new hope by spotlighting some of the most extraordinary research being done today."
