Paula Deen Fans Join the Fracas Over Her Racial Slurs and Her Food Network Firing

Fans of television chef Paula Deen are sounding off about the recent controversy surrounding the television chef. The New York Times reports that some fans jumped to her defense after Food Network dropped her for using racial slurs and considering a plantation-themed wedding.

A line of mostly white Paula Deen fans stood outside her Savannah restaurant The Lady and Sons on Saturday morning, with talk about boycotting Food Network over dropping their favorite chef, the story notes.

As previously reported, Food Network said it wouldn’t renew Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of June, after she admitted in a deposition for a discrimination lawsuit that she had used racial epithets.

One woman in line Saturday morning was Nicole T. Green, 36, an African-American who said she stopped at the restaurant to show her support for Deen.

"I get it, believe me,” Green told The Times. “But what’s hard for people to understand is that she didn’t mean it as racist. It sounds bad, but that’s not what’s in her heart. She’s just from another time.”

Many fans felt Food Network’s decision was out of proportion, and the network’s Facebook page filled with comments from Deen supporters who disagree with the network’s decision, the piece notes.

  1. We have no place in this great country for a racist fool like that so-called cook. Too many people are overweight in the US today and she’s part of that-along with McDonald’s and the other fastfood places that give you giant sugar drinks and bad food that people eat without realizing what it can do to your health.
Like cigarettes, fastfood restaurants should have warning signs about the dangers they provide customers.

  2. Really intelligent comment. People shouldn’t have to take responsibility for their own actions. It’s those darn fast food places that hold us down and force food down our throats. I have rope burns on my arms and neck from when McDonalds employees hog tied me and forced me to eat their food. I’m not fat because of something I did. It’s other people’s fault.
