ABC Shows Sink to Historic Lows; Lackluster Opening for New NBC Series

Fresh off a series low last week, an ABC show pushed the ratings bar even lower Thursday night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. Meanwhile, the trend toward less-than-spectacular results for new summer series continued with a new NBC game show.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that ABC’s "Motive" followed last week’s series-low 0.9 average in viewers 18-49 with an even lower 0.8 last night, losing 11%. Elsewhere on ABC, "Wipeout" set a series low of its own with a 0.9, down 10% from its previous original. And completing a grim trifecta for ABC, "Rookie Blue" sank 17% from its previous original to a season-low 1.0, as ABC came in fifth for prime time overall among the broadcast networks.

The news wasn’t much better for NBC, where the series premiere of "Hollywood Game Night" delivered a 1.3 average in the 18-49 demo at 10 p.m., 24% below the series premiere of "Stars Earn Stripes" last August. NBC opened prime time with a repeat episode of "The Winner Is …" (0.8 average), followed by the show’s time slot premiere at 9 p.m. The fresh episode managed only a 1.0, shedding a hefty 47% from its most recent original. And NBC came in just a tick ahead of ABC for prime time overall.

At the upper end of Thursday night’s broadcast ratings, Fox and CBS battled to a draw in the 18-49 demo, with both networks airing just one hour of fresh programming. CBS’s "Big Brother" and Fox’s "Hell’s Kitchen" went head-to-head at 9 p.m., with both shows delivering 2.0 averages. The numbers for "Big Brother" have been trending higher since the racism issue surfaced recently on the show, and last night’s episode came in 18% above last Wednesday’s live show.

"Hell’s Kitchen," which followed a repeat episode of the same series (1.1 average in 18-49 for the repeat), was down 5% from its previous original with its 2.0 average.

For prime time overall, CBS and Fox finished in a tie for first place with 1.6 averages in adults 18-49, followed by Univision (1.4 average), NBC (1.0) and ABC (0.9). CBS won total viewers with 6.0 million, followed by ABC (4.6 million), Fox (4.0 million), NBC (3.8 million) and Univision (3.7 million).

  1. Well, it didn’t help that just a couple of weeks after the shows started, they were preempted by basketball and then last week was July 4. But they’re not bad shows.
