Reality Franchise Rises to the Occasion as Finale Lifts Fox to Nightly Win

A Fox reality franchise, airing its two-hour season finale Thursday night, helped lift the network to a win for the night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that "Hell’s Kitchen" delivered a 2.2 average rating, enough to give Fox a comfortable win over its broadcast rivals.

The number for "Hell’s Kitchen" was a 5% improvement from last week, but in a summer when broadcast viewership is generally down, it’s no surprise that the finale was down from last year’s season finale — 12% below the installment that aired Sept. 10, 2012.

The top show on broadcast last night was CBS’s "Big Brother," which equaled last week’s 2.4 average in the 18-49 demo. CBS finished second behind Fox for prime time overall, while winning the night in total viewers — even with the rest of its prime-time lineup consisting of repeat programming.

ABC’s slate of all-new programming was only good enough for fourth place among the broadcast nets behind Fox, CBS and Univision. Pacing the network was "Rookie Blue" with a 1.1 in viewers 18-49, matching last week’s episode; "Wipeout" dipped 9% to a 1.0, equaling its series low; and "Motive" was even with last week’s series-low 0.8.

Bringing up the rear among what now amounts to a "Big 5" lineup of broadcasters was NBC, which rolled out a fresh "The Winner Is" (0.9 average in 18-49, same as last week) and a new "Hollywood Game Night" (1.3 average, up 8%).

The overall prime-time numbers show Fox on top in adults 18-49 with its 2.2 average rating, followed by CBS (1.7 average), Univision (1.4), ABC (1.0) and NBC (0.9). CBS takes the top spot in total viewers with 6.3 million, followed by Fox (5.4 million), ABC (4.7 million), Univision (3.7 million) and NBC (3.5 million).
