Cosmo Allegretti, a set painter who became a figure on the children’s television classic "Captain Kangaroo," has died, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker. He was 86.

Allegretti died July 26 of emphysema, the story reports. The performer stumbled into the show after producers were unhappy with a puppet and he offered to create a new design.

He portrayed Dancing Bear, and voiced many characters including Mr. Moose and Grandfather Clock. The show aired on CBS from 1955 to 1984, with Bob Keeshan in the title role. Keeshan died in 2004, while Hugh Brannum, who played Mr. Green Jeans, died in 1987. (Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash, who recently left his role on "Sesame Street," also worked on the show in the 1980s, the story adds.)

Allegretti was married in the 1950s to actress Carol Lawrence, who has appeared on shows such as "Sex and the City" and "Saved by the Bell."
