The National Football League returned to Sunday nights with an NBC preseason game between the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys, lifting the Peacock Network to an easy ratings win for the night, based on Nielsen overnights.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that NBC rolled to a win for prime time overall with a 2.9 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, well ahead of CBS (1.3 average), Fox (1.2), ABC (0.9) and Univision (0.8). Things were much tighter in total viewers, but NBC won it by averaging 8.0 million, topping CBS (6.7 million), ABC (3.8 million), Fox (2.5 million) and Univision (2.0 million).

The NFL game delivered a preliminary 3.3 average in viewers 18-49, 10% higher than the equivalent number last year.

The other broadcast networks were generally down. CBS’s "Big Brother" slipped 4% from a week ago to a 2.2 average rating in 18-49, while its "Unforgettable" fell to an all-time low of 1.2, losing 8% from the season premiere a week ago.

ABC’s "Secret Millionaire" had its lowest-rated season premiere yet, delivering a 1.2, off 20% from the premiere a year ago. "Whodunnit?" equaled its series low with a 1.0, falling 9% from last week.

Fox aired a lineup of "Animation Domination" repeats, with the best number being a 1.6 in 18-49 for a "Family Guy" episode.
