A longtime NBC News correspondent and anchor has died. Citing the network, TVNewser reports that John Palmer died after a "short, sudden illness." He was 77.

"NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt said Palmer was a "dear colleague and friend," whom "many of you welcomed into your living rooms for a good many years. … ’Been there, done that’ only begins to describe John’s career. There was no one better in the trenches, and as a colleague, no one more liked.”

Palmer worked as a foreign correspondent for NBC News, then started covering the White House in 1979 and went on to cover five presidents. In 1982 he joined "Today," where he was a news anchor with hosts Jane Pauley and Bryant Gumbel. He left NBC News in 1990, and rejoined four years later.

  1. Since he’s been off air, he has been sorely missed by this producer, writer, journalist.
One of the good ones who was consistent with his high quality of work.
The industry today needs more like John.
