James Hibberd has joined TelevisionWeek as a reporter in Los Angeles.
He will cover all aspects of the television business and contribute regularly to the publication’s special reports and franchises, such as Newspro. He reports to Editor Alex Ben Block.
Mr. Hibberd is an award-winning journalist with nearly a decade of experience as a staff writer and a freelancer. Most recently he wrote investigative features, in-depth profiles and breaking news stories for the New Times chain of weekly newspapers, primarily in Phoenix and Denver.
Mr. Hibberd’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Salon, Cosmopolitan, Details, Men’s Health and The Austin American-Statesman. He was a Maggie Award Finalist in 2001.
“This is an important addition to the growing staff of TelevisionWeek and will help us fulfill our mission to serve as the community newspaper of the television business,” Mr. Block said. “James is a talented journalist who will bring great energy and experience to our newsroom. We are delighted he is now a part of our team.”
While working for the Phoenix New Times, Mr. Hibberd landed an exclusive interview with an eco-arsonist who was burning luxury home constructions. At the time, the arsonist was the most-wanted criminal in the state and the target of an FBI task force. With the support of his employer, Mr. Hibberd successfully fought county and federal subpoenas trying to force him to break his confidentiality agreement with his source. The arsonist stopped burning houses after the interview and was caught soon after. Mr. Hibberd’s coverage was featured in a recent segment of NBC’s “Dateline” about the arsonist.
