The Insider

Those who couldn’t wait to see how conservative commentator Pat Buchanan behaved during the Aug. 12 visit to MSNBC’s “Buchanan and Press” by “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s” Fab Five were struck by Mr. Buchanan’s conspicuous absence.
Those who asked around for the whys and wherefores of Mr. Buchanan’s no-show had their choice of answers.
Mr. Buchanan was: a) previously committed to something else when it was decided to pretape two segments via satellite with the Fab Five; b) not about to take fashion advice from anyone but his wife; or c) so adamantly opposed to interacting-even long distance-with the “Queer Eye” ensemble that he refused even to read teases for the segments, which were handled by the more liberal-and less fashion-challenged-Bill Press.
Guess which of these multiple answers The Insider is going with.
Warm Feeling for `Cold Pizza’
The Insider has never been a fan of cold pizza. But she warmed up to the idea of “Cold Pizza” when she learned that Brian Donlon is one of the folks cooking up the sports-centric morning show scheduled to be telecast live from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays on ESPN2 starting Oct. 1.
In the ’80s and ’90s Mr. Donlon was a reporter who covered TV for USA Today. Then he left the world of ink-stained wretches and joined the TV business, whose ratings and machinations had long fascinated him. Those who recall his days of producing sports programming and sponsorships for Lifetime Television for Women will savor the 180-degree turn he’s taking as coordinating producer of “Pizza,” with which ESPN2 will court men 18 to 34 in a daytime otherwise for and about women.
“Pizza” will offer manly spins on such morning show staples as news breaks, gossip, entertainment, celebrities and the latest guy-type gadgets and playthings. It will all emanate live from a studio (equipped with an indoor viewing space) near Madison Square Garden. Consulting producer on “Pizza” is former NBC “Today” and CBS “The Early Show” producer Steve Friedman. The on-air talent is expected to be announced this week.
