Start-up cable network EdgeTV has signed “Spider-Man” actor Tobey Maguire and World Series of Poker champion Phil Hellmuth to its board of advisers, the company announced today. Edge is seeking to become the first entertainment channel devoted to “games of skill, strategy and chance.” The network said Mr. Maguire and Mr. Hellmuth will help develop programming that fit the channel’s brand.

“We are working hard to assemble a team that will help EdgeTV be the first network to successfully blend entertainment and gaming,” said Keith Richman, Edge TV co-founder and president, in a statement. “Tobey and Phil are both superstars in their fields as well as fans of our genre. We are very excited about their participation in helping create EdgeTV and in making it a network that viewers will demand and operators will embrace.”

EdgeTV is aiming for an early 2005 launch.
