ABC is developing two shows for high-profile stars Melissa Etheridge and Salma Hayek. Ms. Etheridge will star as a lesbian rocker-turned-music teacher in a comedy pilot for Twentieth Television and Brad Grey Television, while Ms. Hayek will star in the American version of the hit Spanish-language telenovela “Betty La Fea,” the story of a homely fashion industry secretary who falls in love with her handsome boss.
In the comedy pilot, Ms. Etheridge’s character lives with her best friend, a straight man, and helps him raise his daughter. The half-hour script is being written by Linda Wallem, who will executive produce along with Ms. Etheridge and Brad Grey. The project has received a script commitment and a penalty.
Ms. Hayek’s Ventanarosa Productions will produce the hour-long American version of “Betty” along with Reveille’s Ben Silverman, who owns the rights to the successful Colombian production. The pilot will be written by Kerry Ehrin.
