‘Hawaii’ Makes Splash

The premiere of NBC’s new action drama “Hawaii” Wednesday night was the most-watched show of the evening in households but couldn’t beat Fox’s reality preview “Renovate My Family” in adults 18 to 49.

According to Nielsen Media Research fast nationals, “Hawaii” scored a 7.0 rating and 12 share in its 8 p.m. time period among households, easily beating “Renovate My Family’s” two-hour household average of 5.8/9. But “Renovate” edged out “Hawaii” in the adults 18 to 49 demo its first half-hour (2.9/10 versus 2.8/10), and took a bigger lead in its second half-hour (3.6/11 versus 3.3/10). Fox took the steam out of NBC with the second hour of “Renovate,” pulling in a 4.3 rating and 12 share in the adults 18 to 49 demo in the 9 p.m. half-hour, growing to a 4.9/13 at 9:30 p.m.

“Hawaii” and a special “Dateline” featuring Jane Pauley helped NBC win the night with a 5.9 rating and 10 share in households. Fox took the night among in adults 18 to 49 with a 3.9 rating and 12 share.

NBC and Fox, along with ABC’s repeat comedy lineup of “My Wife and Kids” and “Drew Carey,” all easily outpaced CBS’s “5th Annual Latin Grammy Awards,” which garnered only a 2.4 rating and 4 share. The second half-hour of “Amish in the City” on UPN even beat the Latin Grammys in the 18 to 49 demo.

NBC won the 10 p.m. hour with its coverage of the Republican National Convention, scoring a 3.9 rating and 7 share among households. ABC’s convention coverage was a distant second (2.3/4), with CBS close behind (2.2/4).
