Kelley Says Emmy Wins Can’t Hurt ‘Boston Legal’

In a conference call today “Boston Legal” creator David E. Kelley said he is uncertain whether recent Emmy wins for “The Practice” actors James Spader and William Shatner will help the “Practice” spinoff succeed when it premieres Sunday, Oct. 3, on ABC.

“I’m not sure if Emmy wins translate to longevity of shows,” Mr. Kelley said. Both actors will continue playing their characters on “Boston Legal.” “The main thing, we were happy for James and William. They had done great work-especially James, since he carried the series last year.”

Mr. Kelley said “Boston Legal” will have a different feel from “The Practice,” with the new firm focusing on civil instead of criminal cases, and will have a brighter, glossier look.

“‘The Practice’ by nature was very gritty,” he said. “The story lines will probably be more fun-probably more of a soap opera as we go forward.”
