Monday’s visit of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry gave CBS’s “Late Show With David Letterman” a bounce past NBC’s “Tonight Show” to its best premiere in the metered markets in 11 years.

According to data from Nielsen Media Research, Monday’s “Late Show” averaged a 5.4 rating/13 share in the 56 metered markets, a mark Mr. Letterman has not hit since his first year on CBS. “The Tonight Show” averaged a 4.3/10 in the same markets Monday.

Monday’s 5.4/13 was the highest overall rating for “Late Show” on any night of the week since a 5.5/14 on Monday, March 29, 2004, when the headliner was Janet Jackson.
