Less than a week before the 2004 Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast, E! has announced a red carpet coverage team to replace Joan and Melissa Rivers, who left the network for the TV Guide Channel last July.

“The View” co-host Star Jones will lead a team of E! personalities in covering the event. The team includes Robert Verdie (host of new E! weekly series “Fashion Police”) and Brooke Burke (co-host of “Wild On”). KTLA Morning News entertainment reporter Sam Rubin, E! Online’s Kristin Veitch and Andrew Firestone actor/comedian Mystro Clark will fill in.

“We’re thrilled to have Star on the Red Carpet,” said Ted Harbert, president and CEO of E! Networks. “Her strong ties to the Hollywood community, provocative personality and fashion sensibility make her the perfect anchor of our awards coverage.”

Last July TV Guide Channel lured Joan and Melissa Rivers from E! after eight years for a reported $8 million three-year contract. But the mother-daughter duo have been blocked from doing their trademark Emmy coverage for their new employers due to a previously undisclosed exclusive live coverage contract between E! and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Industry speculation on who would replace the veteran red carpet team included names such as Ellen DeGeneres and Paris Hilton.

The E! red carpet coverage will begin two hours before the Sunday, Sept. 19, Emmy broadcast.
