Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La., former House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman, has been named president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association of America, effective Jan. 3.

Rep. Tauzin, who is retiring from Congress, achieved industry notoriety earlier this year when he turned down an offer to succeed Jack Valenti as chief of the Motion Picture Association of America, a job that paid more than $1 million per year. The PhRMA post reportedly pays substantially more.

In a PhRMA statement, Rep. Tauzin said he survived a battle with intestinal cancer this year with the help of “advanced, life-saving medicines.”
