Verizon on Wednesday announced an agreement that will allow it to distribute Discovery Communications’ 14 U.S.-based cable TV networks over a new fiber-to-the-premises network the company is rolling out in its service areas.

A Verizon spokeswoman said the Discovery agreement is the first programming deal the company has announced for FiOS, a new Verizon service that will deliver voice, video and data services to homes and businesses through a single connection. As part of the rollout, the company has negotiated cable franchises in Beaumont, Calif., and the Dallas suburb of Sachse, Texas.

The agreements will allow Verizon to offer bundled packages of telecommunications services that include traditional cable television programming. A spokeswoman said Verizon is also discussing franchise agreements with other municipalities in which the company does business. Verizon currently offers traditional telephone service in 29 states. The company recently announced plans to roll out fiber to 3 million homes by the end of next year.
