A coalition of watchdog groups announced Monday that it will oppose efforts by Comcast or Time Warner Cable to acquire Adelphia Communications’ cable systems, fighting any deal all the way down to the local franchise level.

In letters to the companies, the groups–including the Center for Digital Democracy, Common Cause, the Media Access Project, Free Press and the Center for Creative Voices in the Media–said they fear a deal would give Time Warner or Comcast too much power over the cable industry.

“We are opposed to Time Warner or Comcast buying any additional cable companies, and we’re willing to engage in hand-to-hand combat at the local level,” said Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy.
