Starting Tuesday, the last three contestants on Fox’s musical reality series “American Idol” will each get an additional phone line for voting purposes.

At the end of each finalist episode, viewers are able to call in and vote for their favorite singer. Throughout the history of the series, critics have complained too many voters were getting busy signals.

For the May 17, episode, the three “Idol” finalists, Bo Bice, Vonzell Solomon and Carrie Underwood, will be assigned two toll-free phone numbers instead of one.

“With the volume of calls this season already exceeding last year’s, we felt it was important to give fans additional phone numbers in an attempt to reduce congestion,” “Idol” executive producer C%E9;cile Frot-Coutaz of FremantleMedia said in a statement.

The No. 1 program of the season among adults 18 to 49 and in total viewers, “Idol” is from 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America.
