ABC’s surprise summer reality hit “Dancing With the Stars” will be back in 2006 as a midseason series with a new cycle of episodes. The announcement was made Wednesday by Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment.

The series will continue to be produced by BBC Worldwide Productions, creators of the British show “Strictly Come Dancing,” which was the basis for “Stars.” Richard Hopkins and Conrad Green are executive producing.

The series pairs celebrities with professional ballroom dancers. The couples then compete in front of a studio audience and are judged by a panel of experts. ABC has not announced the six celebrities who will appear in the show.
