Cary Elwes has been tapped to play the young Pope John Paul II in the planned CBS miniseries on the late pontiff’s life, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Tuesday.

Mr. Elwes, who had a recurring role on Fox’s “The X-Files” and in the features “The Princess Bride” and “Ella Enchanted,” joins a cast that includes Ian Holm, who will play the pope in later life.

The miniseries is not yet in production. Airdates have also not been announced.
