MTV Announces Video Music Award Nominees

Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott and U2 top the 2005 MTV Video Music Award nominations list, unveiled Monday morning. The star-studded show will be aired live at 8 p.m. (ET), tape-delayed on the West Coast, Aug. 28 from the American Airlines Arena in Miami and will be hosted by Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.

Rapper Kanye West and Green Day, both of whom received nominations for Video of the Year, will perform, as will “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson.

Coldplay, Ms. Stefani and Snoop Dogg with Pharrell also received nominations for the Video of the Year award, which recognizes both artists and producers. Best New Artist in a Video nominees include The Killers, John Legend and My Chemical Romance.

The water-themed show will feature live performances throughout the city of Miami, five performance stages and a water show from the creators of fountain display at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. The pre-show will feature a celebrity car show in addition to the usual red-carpet interviews, and has been extended an extra hour.

The “Video Music Awards” telecast will be available to more than 1 billion people around the world on MTV’s 45 channels as well as on MTV’s 38 international Web sites.

“The ‘VMAs’ will be experienced in more places and on more platforms than ever before in our history,” said Christina Norman, president of MTV. “Between Diddy, who is the ultimate showman and entertainer, and the diverse roster of performers already locked in, this show is already shaping up to be an unforgettable end-of-summer bash.”
