ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson will be honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for his commitment to diversity at a newly created awards event.

The first Televisionary Salon & Awards will be held at the Beverly Hills Country Club Aug. 16. The awards were created by the ATAS Committee on Diversity to honor network, studio and production executives who are responsible for programs featuring ethnically diverse on-screen and off-screen talent.

“As a result of our groundbreaking daylong conference ‘Television’s Challenges in Black, White and Multicolor,’ held last fall at the Television Academy, we created the Televisionary Salon & Awards to further recognize the contributions that industry executives are taking to create diversity in television — in executive and creative ranks as well as on screen,” said Dick Askin, chairman and CEO of the Television Academy. “I’m delighted that Steve has been chosen to be the first recipient of this award, which reflects his dedication to diversifying his network and leading the way for the industry.”

The event will be sponsored by TelevisionWeek and hosted by “Access Hollywood” weekend co-anchor Shaun Robinson.

Future salons will recognize nonfiction programming and performers among other Television Academy groups.
