National Geographic Channel will launch a high-definition spinoff network, the channel and Fox Networks Group announced today. The net, currently dubbed NGC HD, will roll out in early 2006 to coincide with National Geographic Channel’s 5th anniversary.

“Our many cable and satellite partners have embarked on an aggressive buildup of their own HD capability, and so it’s incumbent on us to provide them the best content we can,” said Tony Vinciquerra, president and CEO of Fox Networks Group. “National Geographic’s rich tapestry of adventure, exploration, culture and science is something that not only begs for an HD application but truly demands it.”

The channel said nearly all of its current programming is being shot in high definition in preparation for the new network. Also, National Geographic Channel has acquired HD programming this past year but did not release specific titles.
