Actor Bob Denver, best known for playing the bumbling castaway Gilligan on “Gilligan’s Island,” died Friday. He was 70.

Mr. Denver played the role of Gilligan from 1964 to 1967 and reprised the role in several films, such as the made-for-television “The Harlem-Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” in 1981 and the feature “Back to the Beach” in 1987.

Although Mr. Denver was inextricably linked to the Gilligan character, he played in a number of TV series, including “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” from 1959 to 1963, “The Good Guys” from 1968 to 1970 and “Far Out Space Nuts” in 1975. In 1977 he played the lead in the Woody Allen play, “Play It Again, Sam,” during which he met his wife, Dreama, who was cast opposite him.

Mr. Denver also acted with Sheila Kuehl in “Dobie Gillis,” before she became a California State Senator. The state senate commemorated Mr. Denver today and adjourned in his memory, according to Ms. Kuehl.

Mr. Denver is survived by his wife and four children.
