The season premiere of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” was the highest-rated show in adults 18 to 49 on the first Sunday of the 2005-06 season, improving over its debut last year.

“Housewives” scored a 12.1 preliminary national rating in the demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. That gave the 9 p.m. (ET) one-hour comedy a 36 percent increase over its premiere demo performance last season (8.9).

At 10 p.m., “Housewives” lead-out “Grey’s Anatomy” scored an 8.6 in the demo, up 79 percent over the year-ago performance of the season premiere of “Boston Legal” (4.8) and a 19 percent increase over its own midseason premiere last season.

On NBC, new 8 p.m. time period holder “The West Wing” scored a 2.4 in the demo, down 20 percent from the premiere of “American Dreams” last year.
