Add Yahoo! to the list.

The Web portal leader has joined a crowded field of suitors lining up to buy a stake in Time Warner’s America Online, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal Web site. Already, cable giant Comcast, search king Google and software giant Microsoft have all expressed interest in buying a stake in AOL.

The reason for Yahoo!’s interest in AOL is apparently similar to that of Google and of Microsoft, which a few weeks ago expressed an interest in combining its online service MSN with AOL. All three companies see an opportunity to deploy their respective search functions to AOL’s massive customer base, which totaled 112 unique U.S. visitors in September, according comScore Media Metrix.

Whether a deal will be consummated with Yahoo! remains to be seen, however. The article points out that a link up with AOL could draw the attention of federal regulators concerned that a combined AOL-Yahoo! might violate antitrust laws.
