The NFL announced Saturday that NFL Network, the NFL’s two-year-old network, will televise a “run-up to the playoffs” package of eight prime-time regular-season NFL games starting in the 2006 season.

Several companies, including Comcast’s OLN and an unnamed broadband company, were among the other contenders for the package, according to the NFL. Terms were not disclosed. The eight-game package will consist of prime-time games played from Thanksgiving through the end of the regular season on Thursday and/or Saturday nights.

NFL Network will make the games available for free on over-the-air television in the participating team markets. NFL Network is available in about 40 million homes.
