Herb Scannell, president of MTV Networks Group and Nickelodeon Networks, is leaving the company after a 20-year run, the company announced Wednesday.

“After nearly 20 years with MTV Networks and Nickelodeon, I felt this was the right time to move to the next leadership position in my career,” Mr. Scannell said in a statement.

Mr. Scannell told MTV Networks Chairman and CEO Judy McGrath of his plans in December, a company spokesman said.

Ms. McGrath is assigning broader responsibilities for a new kids and family group, including oversight of its digital businesses, to Nickelodeon Television President Cyma Zarghami. Ms. Zarghami will also oversee Nick at Nite. Larry Jones, president of Nick at Nite and TV Land, will report to both Ms. Zarghami and Doug Herzog, president of Spike TV and Comedy Central.

Under Mr. Scannell, Nick has become the No. 1 cable network for kids, expanded into the movie business and launched a consumer products business based on characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer that has expanded to $4 billion in sales.
