Cable operator Mediacom Communications said Thursday that it swung to a fourth-quarter loss of $212.7 million, compared with a year-earlier profit of $2 million, hurt by an accounting charge of $197.3 million.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $280.3 million.

For the year, Mediacom reported a loss of $222.2 million, compared with a profit of $13.6 million a year ago. Revenue advanced 4 percent to $1.1 billion.

The results came as Mediacom lost 6,000 basic cable subscribers in the quarter. That figure was offset by an increase of 17,000 in digital cable subscribers, along with a 25,000-customer gain in Mediacom’s high-speed data service.
