Fox Wins Week in Adults 18-49; CBS Wins Total Viewers

The two episodes of “American Idol” were the two highest-rated shows in adults 18 to 49, winning Fox the No.1 spot among the networks in the advertiser-friendly demo for the week ended March 19.

Despite Fox’s also taking the two top spots in total viewers, CBS edged out Fox for No. 1 network in viewers with help from “CSI: Miami” and its new drama “The Unit.”

The Tuesday edition of “Idol” was the highest-rated program for the week in both demos, hitting a 13.7 rating in adults 18 to 49 and garnering 32.8 million viewers, numbers that include live-plus-same-day viewing, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Wednesday’s “Idol” was No. 2 with an 11.5 rating and 28.1 million viewers, followed by ABC’s Sunday night drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” which scored a 9.3 in adults 18 to 49 and 21.1 million viewers.

Fox’s special post-“Idol” Wednesday premiere of its new comedy “The Loop” was fourth in adults 18 to 49 with a 6.5, followed by ABC’s reality series “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (6.4).

Among other midseason newcomers, ABC’s Thursday reality series “American Inventor” was ranked ninth in adults 18 to 49 with a 5.4, while CBS’s comedy “The New Adventures of Old Christine” came in at No. 14 with a 4.8.

In total viewers “CSI: Miami was fourth with 19.0 million, with the second episode of midseason drama “The Unit” rounding out the top five with 18.1 million viewers.

Fox was No.1 for the week in adults 18 to 49 with a 4.9, followed by CBS (3.9), ABC (3.4), NBC (3.1), Univision (1.7), UPN (1.2), The WB (1.0) and Telemundo (0.4).

In total viewers CBS was tops with 12.2 million, followed by Fox (11.6 million), ABC (9.3 million), NBC (9.0 million), Univision (4.1 million), UPN (3.0 million), The WB (2.3 million) and Telemundo (943,000).
