O’Donnell to Replace Vieira on ‘The View’

The syndicated entertainment magazine “Extra” says it has learned that ABC on Friday will announce that Rosie O’Donnell will replace Meredith Vieira as a co-host of “The View.”

A spokesman for “The View” confirmed for TelevisionWeek that an announcement about “The View” is indeed scheduled for Friday, the day of the network’s live broadcast of the Daytime Emmys show from Los Angeles, but he declined to say what the announcement would be about.

The ensemble from “The View,” including creator Barbara Walters and Ms. Vieira, are scheduled to be all together for the Emmys. Indeed, they have been urging “View” fans to tune in to the Emmys to see the quintet extend its streak of being blanked in the competition for the outstanding host Emmy yet another year.

The excitable Ms. O’Donnell was an Emmy-winning host of her talk show, a three-year hit daytime vehicle that had seemed to lay a hugely profitable foundation for a one-woman multimedia empire until she walked away in 2002, declaring herself burned out. She has been a guest on “The View.” In the years since leaving her show she has declared herself a lesbian, flirted with one of the worst haircuts in history, fought with the publisher of her eponymous magazine and backed a money-losing Broadway musical.
