HBO has begun filming a two-part miniseries set in Thailand chronicling the 2004 tsunami that devastated the region, the network announced Thursday. The miniseries, with the working title “Tsunami,” will star Tim Roth (“Rob Roy”) and “Sophie Okonedo” (“Hotel Rwanda”). “Tsunami” will follow a group of characters whose lives are transformed by the cataclysmic natural disaster.

“The images of the tragedy have seared our memories, and this miniseries follows in the HBO tradition of getting behind the headlines to reveal the human drama of those caught up in events outside their control,” said Colin Callender, president of HBO Films.

“Tsunami” is produced by HBO Films in association with BBC Drama and will run on HBO and BBC Two later this year.
