General Motors and Discovery Channel have agreed to team up to create a series focusing on a group of GM designers working on a high-tech, clean-running concept car.

GM will not sponsor the show, but will have content approval, a GM spokesperson said. “We get a chance to look at everything in advance,” the spokesperson said. GM crews will also shoot some background scenes when the primary producer, CBS Productions, is not present.

The four-part series is scheduled to air in 2007. It will have exclusive access to the GM Design internship program and provide a rare look at GM’s design studios, confidential proving grounds, aerodynamics labs and engineering centers.

“In working with GM, we are providing valuable information to consumers about how today’s automotive designers and tomorrow’s innovators are working to solve the challenges that impact so many of us on a daily basis,” said Jane Root, executive VP and general manager of Discovery Channel, The Science Channel and Military Channel.
