Lifetime has ordered 20 episodes of the telenovella “Bianca,” based on a popular German series of the same name, the network said Monday.

The series is produced by FremantleMedia North America and will be shot in Australia. TelevisionWeek first reported Lifetime’s telenovella project in March as part of Entertainment President Susanne Daniels’ plan to lure younger viewers and offer more diverse genres of programming.

“‘Bianca’ is an exciting series for us — it’s a sexy, flirty, fun modern soap filled with deception, murder, secrets and betrayal — and is an ideal format for our audience,” Ms. Daniels said in statement Monday.

The project will be the first scripted series produced by the U.S. division of FremantleMedia, which is best known for importing its overseas reality formats such as “American Idol.”

“Bianca” will debut on Lifetime this fall.
